The history of bingo

Bingo is one of the most popular forms of gambling in the world. One of the reasons for this is the history of the game. Rather than evolving in casinos like most forms of gambling bingo actually became popular in churches where it has been used for decades as a fund raiser. The actual history of the game goes back a lot further than that however.

The history of bingo goes all the way back to the sixteenth century when it was founded in Italy. It started out as a lottery to raise funds for the government and this still happens to this day. Every Saturday millions of Italians play the game that got the whole bingo craze started as part of the lottery. As the game became popular in Italy it started to spread throughout Europe, the casinos of France being the place where it was mostly played.

The game would spread from France to Germany where the Germans put an interesting twist on the game. Rather than using it as a form of gambling it was used as a way to teach children math and spelling. It was apparently even used to teach history although it is not clear exactly how they did this. To this day there are teachers who use bingo as a way to help children to learn in a variety of different subjects.

The game would eventually make its way to America with all of the immigrants coming over. In the early days it was known as beano but when a toy salesman heard somebody yell out bingo by mistake he renamed the game and started marketing it. In order to market bingo the toy salesman hired a mathematician to increase the number of possible combinations on a bingo card, this greatly increased the number of people who could play.

During the early days of bingo in America it was largely played at county fair and similar places. Things changed in the twenties when a Catholic priest decided to use the game as a way to raise funds for his church. Soon the game was being played in churches all across the country and its popularity soared. Even at the height of the depression there were tens of thousands of games of bingo being played everyday in churches around the country.

Today bingo remains as popular as ever, one of the reasons for this is that the game is constantly evolving. There are now thousands of different variations of the game with new ones being created all the time. If you are interested you can click here to play great range of bingo games.
